The technology era is upon us!
Grunge music was big. The early stages of the internet and the pre-mobile devices (like the pager). This decade was the beginning of the adoption of radical body alterations including; tattoos, nose and lip piercings and eventually any other areas one could imagine.
Clothes
Bandanas were worn as decorative or as an affiliation for California gangs in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Sideways Hats were amusingly worn in comedic circles and having fun, with muical artists in the late ’80s, then taken to a style by rap and hip hop artists in the early ’90’s. Baggy Pants originated in the ghetto, where African kids often had to wear secondhand clothes, often handed down from an older sibling. By the 1990s these pants became even baggier and were worn by skaters, hardcore punks, ravers and grangers. These pants and in addition to Hanging Belts were affiliated with gang culture and later with hip hop and rap music. Going to a sports event? Break out the Beer Hat and fill up! Oh no, not the Speedos! Those tight fitting swimsuits used for swimming competitions, then brought into culture by, well men that wanted to show off some. Well, hey woman have those bikini bottom. Wife Beater shirts, also known as a Guinea T (a racial slur against Italians, a popular stereotype.) The origin of the term is from the belief that the shirts are worn predominantly by men who beat their wives; black tank tops were often worn by Ike Turner, a notorious abuser of his wife Tina. In the 1980 movie Raging Bull, the main character, a boxer, is commonly seen wearing wifebeaters around the house, including in one scene where he beats his wife.
Hair
Cornrows also known as rows, braids, or canerows in the Caribbean, are a traditional African style of hair grooming where the hair is braided very close to the scalp, using an underhand, upward motion to produce a continuous, raised row. The style became popular, mainly in the African American communities in the US in the 1990’s, particularly with the rap and hip hop communities.
Accessories
Wallet with chains hanging out. Barbed wire tattoos were the first rage in tattoos. Men hoop earrings. Pager is a wireless device that receives and displays numeric or text messages, or receives and announces voice messages. They became popular in the early 1990′s as a form of communication for people away from home, before the cell phones came out on the market by the late 90′s.
